A (mostly) Fructose-Free Mothers Day High Tea!

After weeks of thinking and planning and trying out recipes, Mothers Day finally arrived and I got to host A (mostly) Fructose-Free Mothers Day High Tea for my mother and immediate family.

I’ve written before about my mother’s recent Diabetes diagnosis, and consequent shift in her diet, and mine, to reduce our fructose intake. Around this time last year, I took her to Adore Tea for her birthday, and we shared high tea. I will always remember that day because it was also when I told her I was pregnant with my second child. Hazelnut Orange Cakes

I always keep these in my freezer, which means I have to bake them often! My fussy husband (originally I accidentally wrote fuzzy, which is also accurate) and son love them, even though my son has otherwise become skeptical of my healthy ‘cakes’. They are also a favourite of my diabetic mother, so I try to keep her freezer stocked with them. Miracle Muesli


I call this my Miracle Muesli because when I made a batch for my diabetic mother to replace her store-bought variety, her (previously high) blood sugar levels dropped to a normal level.

This is probably because her medication kicked in around that time.

But we like to call it the Miracle Muesli anyway! Mum and I have always loved muesli. Warm, cold, with fruit, yoghurt or honey. We’ve even always bought the same brand and flavour, which we thought was healthy. Until we realised how much sugar was in it. I set out to make my own, using mostly organic ingredients, cutting out all the sugar (bar a small amount of organic dried fruit) and emphasising all my favourite seeds. Continue reading
